Ruth Dean – Fifth Grade

Mrs. Dean's Email Address

I attended Ball State University for a year or so after high school, took some time off to work, get married, and have children. I went to I. U. P. U. I. when my “baby” started 1st grade. I earned my B.S. degree in elementary education at the ripe old age of 40 (much to my parents’ delight!)

My “50+” years of teaching experience have all been at St. Malachy School. I taught 2nd grade for 5 years and the rest in 5th grade. My last 2nd grade class is certain that I switched grades to have them again! They’re a special group!

I sponsor the 5th-6th Grade Academic Challenge teams with Miss Beyke. I also help her with the Spell Bowl team. One of our Academic Challenge teams won the Traveling Brain last year – a first for us!

I believe that fifth grade is a pivotal year in which students grow from elementary children to middle school students. They learn to be more responsible, self-directed, and independent.

This year will be filled with unique field trips like the Challenger Center and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. We will also become Patriots and Loyalists in the Revolutionary War as we learn about the founding of our country. I can’t wait to begin the journey with your children.
