Paula Owen – Spanish K-8
![]()
I earned my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Spanish and education from Indiana University in Bloomington. I attended La Unversidad de Complutense de Madrid in Spain my junior year of college. I completed my master’s degree in language education specializing in English as a New Language at IUPUI in Indianapolis.
I have been teaching for 20 years. This is my 9th year at St. Malachy Parish School. I started teaching Spanish at Warren Central High School in 1988. In 1995, I transferred to Stonybrook Middle School to teach English as a New Language and to be the ENL Director for Warren Township. Through the years, I have taught adults ENL at the Walker Career Center and elementary Spanish enrichment, too.
I supervise ASAP on Thursdays after school. If your St. Malachy student is struggling in Spanish, this would be a good time to get help.
I sponsor the State Spanish team. The team consists of 6th-8th graders. Practices begin in January. The State Spanish Competition, Concurso Académico, takes place the end of April.
The St. Malachy K-5 students have Spanish once a week. I instruct these students with a wholistic approach. St. Malachy middle school students, grades 6-8, experience Spanish 3 times a week. In middle school the students analyze Spanish in order to create their own language. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are taught.
I enjoy not only teaching the Spanish language, but also the culture and traditions of the many Hispanic regions of the world. I also feel this opens the door to cultural competency.
I’ve been married for 19 years, and have been blessed with three children and a guinea pig. One of my children attends St.Malachy Parish School and the other two attend Cardinal Ritter High School in Indianapolis.
